Program Rhythm
Dandelion Aftercare is a magical time full of excitement and discovery.
Each day will begin with a small circle and story that will lead to a
quiet rest time. This is a time for the children to rest their bodies
and listen to stories, songs and music. After this gathering and rest
time, the activity of the day begins. Each day offers a different
activity:
Monday: Muffin Day
We will explore different muffins throughout the year: banana,
raisin-cinnamon, blueberry, and some of the children's own creations.
After everything is cleaned and the muffins are in the oven, teacher
and children will go outside to play with streamers -- streamers on a
stick, beanbags with streamers, or dove wings (streamers tied to the
arms). When the muffins are ready, the group returns inside to eat and
listen to a story.
Tuesday: Bubble Day
Each child will receive his or her own jar of bubbles, and after rest
and some movement, teacher and children will go outside to explore.
Straws, wire rings, and a giant bubble contraption will be available
for bubble play, as well. Then, the group will return inside to wash up
and model with beeswax, while preparing for afternoon tea and personal
snack.
Wednesday: Craft Day
A seasonal craft will be offered each Wednesday: sewing small felt
people, pouches and the children's own creations; drawing; modeling
with beeswax; making boats from walnuts; and more. Each week the craft
will be different, and will be shaped by the children's interests and
temperaments. After cleaning the room, teacher and children will go
outside to play with the craft or to make a fort; then return inside
for personal snack and a story.
"'O dandelion, yellow as gold, what do you do all day?'
'I just wait here in the tall green grass 'til the children come to play.'
'O dandelion, yellow as gold, what do you do all night?'
'I wait and wait 'til the cold dews fall and my hair grows long and white.'
'And what do you do when your hair is white and the children come out to play?'
'They take me up in their dimpled hands and blow my hair away.'"
